East West Foods and Surma Food Store of Darlington have been closed by the council due to a very worrying German cockroach infestation after thousands were found on the premises, made worse by the fact that East West Foods supply Asian restaurants throughout the North East.
The council have let all 22 Indian restaurants in the borough know about the infestation, however it is up to the restaurants whether they want to sell the potentially contaminated food.
Barry Pearson, environmental health manager at the council, said: “These cockroaches get into places that can’t be effectively cleaned, and will carry bacteria from places that food normally wouldn’t be in contact with, such as drains, sewers and toilets.”
